'Designer vagina' surgery most popular with 18-24 year olds

From telegraph.co.uk -

Labia reduction, known as 'designer vagina' surgery, is enquired about by an average 1,150 young women each year, says a leading clinic.

‘Designer vagina’ plastic surgery is most popular amongst 18-24 year old women, according to new statistics.

Young women in that age bracket are more likely than any other age group to enquire about labia reduction surgery, Transform Cosmetic Surgery has found.
The cosmetic surgery group has received around 1,150 ‘designer vagina’ requests from 18-24 year olds each year, over the past four years.

It attributes the rise in these enquiries to “unrealistic representations of female genitalia in pornographic materials”.

But while labia reduction is popular, the top surgical enquiries for young women are boob jobs, nose jobs, liposuction, tummy tucks and breast reductions.

Nipple correction, where nipples and areola can be reduced, or inverted nipples are altered, is also most popular amongst 18-24 year olds, out of all the age brackets.

Popular non-surgical procedures include dental and laser work, fillers, peels and botox.
Patricia Dunion, chief operating officer, said: “We've been helping patients for 40 years and in that time there's been a massive change in what they enquire about. We've had 350,000 from all over the country in the last four years alone.

“The trends are an insight into what influences have been at play. We'd never have guessed the Rooney effect would generate 5,500 enquiries for hair transplants - or that curvaceous bottoms would be all the rage in the noughties.

“Transform is in a privileged position to report this information with authority and we plan to track it over the next 40 years to give an insight into the psyche of Brits considering cosmetic surgery.”
A previous 2009 report found that ‘designer vagina’ surgery could have long-lasting risks.
Sarah Creighton, consultant gynaecologist at University College Hospital said: “Labial surgery needs to be rigorously evaluated in future, and for longer term.

''Furthermore, quality research is needed to improve our understanding of the psychological drivers behind women's decision to sacrifice sexually sensitive tissue that contribute to erotic experiences, for a certain genital appearance that used to be an obligation only for some glamour models.

''Alternative solutions, such as counselling and support, should be developed for women and girls.''
